Abe, Irvine Defense Dominate Fairfax

Peter Abe scored two touchdowns and Irvine remained unbeaten with a 28-0 victory over Los Angeles Fairfax Friday at Fairfax High.

The 5-foot-4, 150-pound Abe returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to give the Vaqueros’ a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Abe scored his second touchdown on a nine-yard run.

“It was a perfect way to start the game,” said Abe, who also rushed for 64 yards in 14 carries. “It was important for us to get off to a good start because we’re playing in a weird environment far from home.”

The Irvine defense, led by Brian Porteous and Brian Kotz, dominated Fairfax (2-6). The Vaqueros (8-0) recorded four sacks, forced two fumbles, blocked a punt and held the Lions’ to three yards of offense in the first half.

Late in the first quarter, Godfrey Young capped a six-play, 65-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run that boosted the Irvine lead to 14-0.

The Vaqueros’ increased their lead to 21-0 with 10:33 left in the first half when quarterback Travis Otott threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Smith.

Otott completed 14 of 21 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. Dave Doomey caught eight passes for 120 yards and rushed for 48 yards in six carries.

Irvine Coach Terry Henigan said he was pleased to get the victory. “This game scared the heck out of me,” he said. “No coach wants to play a nonleague game this late in the season, but we had to keep our momentum going.”
