An Alphabetical Look at Changes in the NBA

Last season was one of the slowest in years for NBA trades, but teams made up for it in the off-season with plenty of changes. An alphabetical look at some of the faces in new places:

A is for Atkins, Chucky, who moves from the Magic to the Pistons to become the starting point guard.

B is for Brown, P.J., who won’t be fighting any more Heat-Knicks wars. He goes to Charlotte.

C is for Ceballos, Cedric, who goes from Dallas to Detroit. The over-under on the date of his first assist is Jan. 14.

*

D is for Davis, Dale, who was one of three starters to leave the Indiana Pacers. He goes to Portland.

*

E is for Ewing, Patrick, who wears No. 33 for the Seattle SuperSonics these days.

*

F is for Ferry, Danny, whose contract finally expired. He goes from Cleveland to San Antonio.

G is for Grant, as in Hill, who joined the Orlando Magic after spending his entire pro career in Detroit.

H is for Herren, Chris, who leaves the Nuggets and returns to his home state with the Boston Celtics.

I is for Iavakos, as in Tsakalidis, who went to arbitration to get out of his Greek League contract. He goes to Phoenix as Chris Dudley’s rookie backup.

J is for Jones, Eddie, who used his free agent status to leverage his way into a trade from Charlotte to Miami.

K is for Kemp, Shawn, who takes his large frame and large game from Cleveland to Portland.

*

L is for Lopez, Felipe, who is Michael Jordan’s first big acquisition in Washington, arriving in a trade with Vancouver.

M is for Maggette, Corey, who joins the kiddie corps with the Clippers after a year in Orlando.

*

N is for N’Diaye, Mamadou, a 7-footer from Senegal who joins Denver after four years at Auburn.

O is for O’Neal, Jermaine, who joins high school-to-NBA sidekicks Jonathan Bender and Al Harrington in Indiana.

P is for Parks, Cherokee, the increasingly tattooed center who now resides in Washington after a stint in British Columbia.

Q is for Quentin, as in Richardson, who left DePaul after two seasons and was drafted by the Clippers.

R is for Rider, Isaiah, who has moved his act to Hollywood and will be coming off the bench for the Lakers.

S is for Stith, Bryant, whose eight years in Denver ended with a trade to Boston.

T is for Taylor, Maurice, who thought he’d get a $70 million deal on the open market but took $2.25 from Houston.

*

U is the last letter in Turkoglu, Hidayet, who moves from Efes Pilsen (Turkey) to the Sacramento Kings.

V is for Vaught, Loy, whose bad back and two-year slump move from Detroit to Dallas.

*

W is for Williams, Aaron, who brings his big biceps from Washington to New Jersey.

X is for XNBA, the new name for the Retired Players Association. Charles Barkley and Jeff Hornacek are eligible to join. Kevin Johnson and John Salley are re-eligible.

Y is for Yao, as in Ming. The 7-foot-5 center from China could be the No. 1 pick in the draft next June if authorities permit him to leave.

Z is for Zendon, as in Hamilton, who is trying to make the Clippers and take over Keith Closs’ old job as the backup center.
