Randy McKay and John Madden scored four goals each as the New Jersey Devils equaled the biggest offensive outburst in team history in a 9-0 victory Saturday night over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Madden also assisted on Turner Stevenson’s second goal of the season as New Jersey scored nine goals for the seventh time and tied the franchise mark for largest margin of victory.

McKay and Madden became the first teammates to score four in a game since Odie Cleghorn and Sprague Cleghorn did it for Montreal in a 10-6 win over the Hamilton Tigers on Jan. 14, 1922.

Almost overlooked in the offensive explosion was goalie Martin Brodeur’s 43rd career shutout.

The Devils extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and had two hat tricks in a game for the first time since Brendan Shanahan and Pat Verbeek each scored three goals in an 8-1 win over Toronto on Feb. 23, 1989.

Florida 3, Ottawa 1--Pavel Bure scored two goals at Sunrise, Fla., as the Panthers, the NHL’s last winless team this season, dealt the Senators their first loss.

The Panthers entered 0-3-3, the worst start in franchise history, and snapped Ottawa’s nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3).

Colorado 4, Edmonton 2--Shjon Podein scored two third-period goals 10 seconds apart as the Avalanche extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to 11 with a victory over the Oilers at Denver.

St. Louis 4, Dallas 3--Pierre Turgeon had four points, including an assist on Al MacInnis’ game-winning goal 15 seconds into overtime, as the Blues defeated the Stars at St. Louis.
