Washington safety Curtis Williams remained in intensive care at Palo Alto, Calif., with a spinal cord injury, a day after he was removed from the field on a stretcher against Stanford.

An MRI at Stanford University Hospital revealed the injury, but its exact nature might not be known for several days, said Dave Burton, Washington associate athletic director of sports medicine. Further tests were planned.

A CT scan showed that Williams did not sustain a spinal fracture or broken bone.

Williams was under sedation while undergoing tests Saturday night. He was conscious after the tests and able to respond non-verbally to doctors.

Miami Coach Butch Davis expects Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick (sprained ankle) to be ready for Saturday’s showdown. “He’s not hurt,” Davis said. “If you think he’s hurt, you’re kidding yourself.”

Meanwhile, Davis has his own injury problems. Four starters went down in a victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Fullback D.J. Williams separated his right shoulder. Linebacker Dan Morgan (foot), safety Al Blades (biceps) and center Brett Romberg (broken right pinkie) are being evaluated to see if they will be ready Saturday.

Gary Godsey, who started two games at quarterback for Notre Dame after Arnaz Battle broke his wrist against Nebraska, is moving back to tight end. Godsey played solidly in a victory over Purdue, but was four for 15 passing for 20 yards in a loss to Michigan State. Godsey will be replaced by freshman Matt LoVecchio.
