Fiedler Has the Best Feel

It’s hard to believe that a quarterback who threw three interceptions in his tryout would be named a starter. But welcome to Miami, where it has become obvious that Coach Dave Wannstedt believes Jay Fiedler has a greater upside than Damon Huard.

“He was doing a real good job,” Wannstedt said of Fiedler. “You don’t want to get into specifics about who is faster or who has the better arm. You can beat those to death. It just comes down to the bottom line that a decision has to be made. We feel Fiedler has the best feel for what we’re trying to do for the whole offense.”

The problems for New England in Bill Belichick’s debut as coach will be the running game, which has been cursed since Bob Kraft let Bill Parcells steal Curtis Martin. The Patriots will rely on second-year man Kevin Faulk, who’s best suited to be a third-down back, and rookie J.R. Redmond.

Indianapolis will face a real test in Kansas City. The Colts have invested most of their money in offense. That leaves a defense in which 35-year-old Cornelius Bennett is the key and rookie Rob Morris is the instant starting middle linebacker.

The New York Jets began training camp with the biggest question of all being Coach Al Groh. Could he be his own man, or will he fail trying to get out from the shadow cast by Parcells, director of football operations? We all know how Ray Handley and Pete Carroll fared trying to succeed Parcells. Will Groh be any different?
