Man Fatally Shot in Possible Gang Attack
OXNARD — A 19-year-old Los Angeles man was shot to death Friday night near South Winds Park, in what police described as a possible gang incident.
Arriving officers found the victim slumped inside a parked car after the shooting near the intersection of Courtland and Clara streets, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Tim Lumas.
According to authorities, several men were standing around a car talking at about 7:15 p.m. when a man walked by and fired a shot, striking the victim.
“Our witnesses say there was a person who fired a round and then everybody scattered,” said Oxnard Police Cmdr. Tom Chronister.
The victim, a former Oxnard resident, was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he died about 8 p.m.
Police did not release the victim’s name, saying his family had not been notified.
Police detectives were at the scene late Friday interviewing people and searching for more witnesses. Chronister said it was unclear what prompted the shooting.
