An early morning fire Friday broke out in the attic of a large, two-story house, causing an estimated $250,000 in damage, authorities said.

The blaze erupted about 3 a.m. at a house in the 1700 block of Berkshire Drive and was under control about an hour later, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The residents of the home were away on vacation, but two dogs inside the garage were rescued by firefighters.

Neighbors reported smelling smoke and several telephoned authorities before going outside and trying to slow the fire with garden hoses. When firefighters arrived, the home’s attic and roof were ablaze.

The cause is under investigation.
