The Early Childhood Education Center’s preschool program has 15 openings, officials said Wednesday, and they are looking for parents who want to take advantage of the reduced-price program.

The Moorpark preschool has 135 children enrolled, but director Susanne Smith-Stein said there is room for more students.

“For parents who can’t afford preschool and make ends meet, their children get the opportunities they can’t have at home,” she said.

Admission to the school is based on a family’s income. For example, a family of four that makes less than $37,600 annually can qualify for the program.

The center’s primary funding comes from the state, $400,000 annually, which pays for teachers, supplies and playground equipment. The Moorpark Unified School District provides the classrooms and pays for utilities and maintenance.

More than half of the children speak only Spanish, Smith-Stein said, and four of the six classes are taught in Spanish. During the school year, the children are slowly introduced to English.
