Daniel Fells softened up Anaheim’s defense and Ryan Murray poked holes in it Thursday night, leading Fullerton to a 36-6 nonleague victory over the Colonists at Fullerton High.

Fells, a 6-4, 205-pound wide receiver, caught six of his seven passes in the first quarter and Murray scored two of his three touchdowns to help the Indians to a 14-0 lead.

The victory spoiled the debut of Anaheim Coach Ben Haley, Jr., who took over at his alma mater after six seasons at Santiago.

“I was feeling good tonight,” Fells said. “It was nice having some room to work.”

Fells caught a short pass and turned it into a 24-yard gain on Fullerton’s second possession. On fourth and inches from the Indian 43, Fullerton quarterback Michael Echaves faked a counter play and handed off to Murray, who ran untouched for the touchdown.

Fullerton got the ball back less than a minute later and Fells caught passes for nine, 11 and 13 yards before Murray scored on a 23-yard screen pass. The Indians took a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter, turning a broken play into a 43-yard touchdown run by Echaves. Dutin Sober added a three-yard run shortly before halftime.

Anaheim got its first touchdown of the season late in the third quarter, but it took five attempts from inside the three before tight end Jonny Becerra recovered a fumble by quarterback Ryan Paterson in the end zone.

Murray, who rushed for 122 yards in 14 carries, added a third touchdown on a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Echaves completed 12 of 22 passes for 162 yards and also rushed for 78 yards. Fells finished with seven receptions for 89 yards.
