NCAA DIVISION I-AA

* CS NORTHRIDGE (0-1) vs. SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE (1-0)

At San Marcos, Texas, 5:05 p.m.

The temperature is expected to top 100 degrees in San Marcos and the heat doesn’t figure to let up by kickoff. Northridge hasn’t won a nonconference road game since 1996, and some of the outcomes have been disastrous. The Matadors were routed, 55-6, last week at Air Force, their only Division I-A opponent this season. Southwest Texas, a member of the Division I-AA Southland Conference, is a more suitable opponent. The Bobcats, seeking a move to Division I-A next season, defeated Midwestern State, 34-13, last week. Senior Jason Griffin and junior Reagan George are locked in a duel at quarterback. It was difficult to assess Northridge in its opener. The Matadors were steamrolled by Air Force, managing only two first downs in the first half. There were no serious injuries and quarterback Marcus Brady showed signs he is still a force. Receiver Jason Stone, suspended last week for violating team rules, will aid the offense. Running backs Bruce Molock, Crayton Milton and Terrelus Wright will rotate. Running back Matt Hicks did not travel to Texas because of flu. Safety Sean Atkins is sidelined because of a bruised knee. Southwest Texas has defeated Northridge in two meetings, 43-14 in 1994 and 28-23 in 1995.

DIVISION III

* CAL LUTHERAN (0-0) vs. PACIFIC LUTHERAN (0-1)

At Tacoma, Wash., 1:30 p.m.

Cal Lutheran opens against the Lutes for the fourth consecutive year in the “Lutheran Brotherhood Kickoff Classic.” Pacific Lutheran, defending Division III national champion, has defeated the Kingsmen three consecutive times. Pacific Lutheran holds a 5-3 series edge dating to 1967. Quarterback Chris Czernek and running back Dorian Stitt return in starting roles for Cal Lutheran, 3-6 last season.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

* MOORPARK (0-0) vs. CHAFFEY (0-0)

At Chaffey, 7 p.m.

This nonconference matchup is a tough way for Moorpark to launch the season. Chaffey is ranked No. 20 in the state in preseason and last week ran all over No. 3 Mt. San Antonio in a scrimmage. Coach Jim Bittner of Moorpark is platooning Tim Bird and Mike Spargo at quarterback but plans to settle on one after tonight. Ray Carmel, a cornerback last year, is getting his bearings at tailback. He hasn’t run the ball since leaving Channel Islands High three years ago. Chaffey defeated the Raiders, 49-37, in the opener last year.

* ANTELOPE VALLEY (0-0) vs. SANTA MONICA (0-0)

At Santa Monica, 7 p.m.

Each team is coming off a 5-5 record and squeezing out a couple more victories this year could be tough, especially for Antelope Valley, which is overstocked with freshmen. Coach Brent Carder of Antelope Valley opens his 31st season, easily the longest stint by a coach in the region, with the unenviable task of getting the youngsters battle-ready in a hurry. The Marauders have two games against Western State Conference opponents before starting Foothill Conference play on Sept. 23. Running back David Newton, who had 453 yards rushing and five touchdowns last year, leads Antelope Valley. The Marauders have won only one of their last eight openers, against Santa Monica, 24-14, last year.
