Redskins Ready to Sign Reed to Replace Injured Westbrook

Receiver Andre Reed agreed to a one-year contract Tuesday with the Washington Redskins, two days after Michael Westbrook was lost for the season because of a knee injury.

Reed spent 15 years with the Buffalo Bills before asking for his release during the off-season when asked to play a backup role.

He signed with Denver, but asked to be released when he was not on the active roster at the beginning of the season.

Reed probably will sign the contract today if he passes a physical examination, agent Gary Uberstine said.

Reed has 941 receptions for 13,095 yards and 86 touchdowns in 221 career games. He has been voted to seven Pro Bowls.

The Denver Broncos signed kicker Joe Nedney and running back Raymont Harris after both worked out at the team’s headquarters.

Nedney was one of three kickers who went through an hour-long workout as Denver sought a replacement for Jason Elam, who is expected to miss at least three weeks because of two fractured bones in his lower back.

Voters approved a half-percent sales tax to help the Green Bay Packers renovate Lambeau Field, clearing the way for the team to start construction in January.

With 96% of Brown County’s precincts reporting, 46,386 voters, or 53%, voted for the tax to raise $160 million for the $295-million project. There were 40,947 votes against it.

The county will start collecting the tax Nov. 1, Packer President Bob Harlan said.

Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair was released from a Nashville-area hospital after two nights of observation for a bruised sternum.

McNair, 27, was injured during the fourth quarter of the Titans’ 17-14 overtime victory over Kansas City. Chief defensive end Duane Clemons hit McNair from the blind side.

A Titans spokesman said the team has no timetable for McNair’s return to practice and doesn’t know if he will play in their next game, Sept. 24 at Pittsburgh.

Green Bay right tackle Earl Dotson may need another surgery to repair a herniated lumbar disc in his back. Dotson had surgery during the off-season. . . . Miami receiver Tony Martin and defensive tackle Daryl Gardener might miss Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens because of injuries. Martin has a sprained left foot and Gardener is questionable because of a herniated disc in his back. . . . Pittsburgh quarterback Kent Graham is not expected to miss any action after accidentally slamming his throwing hand into a helmet during practice. . . . Linebacker Brian Simmons, Cincinnati’s top tackler last season, had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and will be out eight weeks. . . . Denver signed offensive tackle Melvin Tuten to replace lineman Trey Teague, who is out for the season because of a knee injury. . . . Philadelphia claimed defensive tackle Darwin Walker off waivers from Arizona. . . . In the second week of the Dennis Miller experiment, ABC’s ratings for “Monday Night Football” dropped 20% from last season’s second game. The game, in which the New York Jets rallied for a 20-19 victory over New England, earned a 12.2 national rating and a 21 share. That was down from the 15.2 and 25 for last year’s matchup between Dallas and Atlanta. . . . Randy Cross, an analyst on CBS’ “The NFL Today” preview show, will fill in as a game analyst on the network’s football telecasts while Sam Wyche recovers from vocal cord surgery.
