Carson Is Defeated on Field Goal

Darryl Kaminsky kicked a 27-yard field goal with six minutes 26 seconds left to lift Fountain Valley to a 17-14 intersectional victory over Carson Saturday night at Orange Coast College.

Kaminsky, who had not kicked in the game because of a pulled quadriceps, was given an ultimatum by his coach, Eric Johnson, after a junior varsity kicker missed the point-after attempt on the Barons’ first touchdown.

And Kaminsky made good, as Fountain Valley defeated the defending City Section champions.

“He didn’t want to kick,” Johnson said, “but he came through.”

Still, Carson had a chance to win. But James Robinson’s fumble at the nine-yard line with 35 seconds left ended his team’s comeback hopes.

Robinson had a bittersweet night. He carried 26 times for 157 of Carson’s 170 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns. But he also fumbled twice.

Robinson lost the grip on the ball on the first drive of the third quarter as he was completing what would have been an 18-yard touchdown run. The ball squirted from his hands as he was being tackled and went into the end zone and out of bounds. Fountain Valley got possession at the 20.
