Germany Powers Past Lackluster Brazil

Germany secured a place in the second round with a 3-2 victory over strangely subdued Brazil at Canberra.

Germany’s Birgit Prinz, a 22-year-old midfielder with a powerful shot, scored goals in the 32nd and the 45th minutes. The latter came before the Brazilians had even one shot on goal.

Substitute Raquel replied for Brazil in the 72nd minute. But the Germans, who have a maximum six points in Pool A after two games, squandered several more chances as they generally outplayed the Brazilians, who have three points.

Renate Lingor sent Prinz sprinting down the right side for the second goal, which Prinz drilled in from just inside the penalty area. Tuesday, Brazil plays Australia, and Germany faces Sweden.

Sweden 1, Australia 1--Sweden got its first point when Malin Andersson’s penalty kick in the 66th minute gave it a tie at Sydney. The deadlock left Australia and Sweden tied at the bottom of their group with one point each.
