The Irish had the noisiest supporters at the Olympic boxing but light-middleweight Michael Roche lost quietly all the same.

Turkey’s Firat Karagollu beat the Cork factory machinist on points, 17-4.

Roche was the sole Irish boxer in the tournament, a sad turnaround from 1992 when Michael Carruth won a welterweight gold and Wayne McCullough took bantamweight silver.
