Evolution of Books Focus of Event

A history of the evolution of books--from clay tablets to the printing press to the computer age--will be presented Saturday at Thousand Oaks Library.

The event’s title, Bookmaking: Evolution from Stone to Paper, may be more of a draw for adults than for school-age children. But the event itself, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road, has attractions for readers of all ages.

Featured presentations will include:

* Artisan demonstrations of stone chiseling, hieroglyphics, Braille, Chinese lettering, illustration, calligraphy, computer techniques and papermaking.

* Children’s activities, such as face painting, Braille writing and hieroglyphic drawing. Each child will also receive his or her own blank paperbound book for story writing.

* Storytelling sessions by performers costumed as historical figures.

* A demonstration of hand-casting of 15th century type by Sidney Berger, director of the California Center for the Book, which is affiliated with the Library of Congress.
