Heidger, Wong Advance Thanks to a Forfeit
The U.S. team of Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong received a forfeit into the quarterfinals when their Mexican opponents dropped out because of injury.
That means the seventh-seeded team that lost its opening match, then lost its second consolation match but still advanced on point difference as the “lucky loser,” has reached the final eight of the men’s competition.
They will play the winner of a match today between Americans Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana and Norway’s Jorre Kjemperud and Vegard Hoidalen.
Heidger and Wong had been questioned over whether they intentionally lost their second consolation match to get a better draw against the 24th-ranked Mexicans.
The Mexican team of Joel Sotelo and Juan Ibarra forfeited because of Sotelo’s groin-muscle injury.
