NCAA DIVISION III

* CAL LUTHERAN (0-1, 0-0) vs. REDLANDS (1-1, 0-0)

At Redlands, 7 p.m.

The Kingsmen would love to snap their four-game losing streak with a victory in a SCIAC opener against the defending conference champions. The Kingsmen hold a 16-12 series edge over Redlands, but the Bulldogs have won seven of the last eight against Cal Lutheran, including 51-20 at Thousand Oaks in last season’s finale. Redlands is coming off a 21-17 loss to Lewis & Clark in a game the Bulldogs led, 17-0, in the fourth quarter. Brandon Ford and Jeff Thomas lead a ground-oriented attack by Redlands. Thomas, the quarterback, had a rushing touchdown against Lewis & Clark. Cal Lutheran’s no-huddle offense sputtered in a 49-7 loss at Pacific Lutheran two weeks ago. Quarterback Chris Czernek ran one yard for a touchdown for Cal Lutheran but likely will throw more in a four-receiver system. The former record-setting quarterback for Newbury Park High completed 32 of 41 for 303 yards. Junior Brian Woodworth led Cal Lutheran with eight catches for 82 yards. Junior Eugene Sullivan had seven catches.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

* VENTURA (1-1, 0-0) vs. HANCOCK (2-0, 0-0)

At Santa Maria Righetti High, 7 p.m.

These teams were co-champions in the Western State Conference Northern Division last season. Hancock is ranked No. 4 in the state and features an unyielding defense. The Bulldogs are especially stingy against the run, allowing 13.5 yards rushing per game and 0.5 yards per carry. Defensive back Jeremy Denison had three interceptions, returning one 21 yards for a touchdown, in Hancock’s 26-3 nonconference victory over San Bernardino last week. Ventura rebounded last week with a 14-7 victory over Mt. San Jacinto. The Pirates head north without running back Maurice Atwood, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last week. Atwood had surgery on the knee last November for a torn ACL. David Cameron picked up the slack with 104 yards rushing and one touchdown against Mt. San Jacinto. Ventura defeated Hancock, 44-26, in the regular season last year and lost to the Bulldogs, 20-13, in the WSC Bowl.

* GLENDALE (1-1, 0-0) vs. CANYONS (2-0, 0-0)

At Canyons, 7 p.m.

Canyons, ranked No. 12 in the state, is averaging 445.0 yards, tops in the WSC, and are allowing 264.5 yards. They are coming off a 48-9 nonconference victory at Antelope Valley, a team as inexperienced as Glendale. Canyons attacks mostly behind quarterbacks Travis Winn (357 yards passing, two touchdowns) and David Parker (299 yards, two touchdowns). Glendale lost to Santa Monica, 28-20, last week. The Vaqueros rely heavily on Jamel Applewhite, who is third in the WSC with 213 yards rushing. Glendale defeated Canyons, 33-28, last year.
