Glendale Again Keeps Opponents at Long Distance

The Glendale College men’s cross-country team posted its second runaway victory in the last nine days on Saturday in the Golden West Classic at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

The Vaqueros, led by individual winner Alejandro Lemus, totaled 39 points to the 91 of runner-up Mt. San Antonio. San Bernardino Valley was third with 93 points, followed by Pasadena City with 133 and El Camino with 140 in the 16-team meet.

Glendale, third in the state championships last year, posted a 21-120 victory over second-place Ventura in the first Western State Conference meet of the season Sept. 15.

Lemus clocked 20:21 over the four-mile course to defeat second-place Manuel Lopez of L.A. City by five seconds.

Ivan Alvarado finished fifth in 20:30 for Glendale with Marco Arriaga seventh in 20:31, Walter Navarro 12th in 20:41 and Ruben Ruiz 14th in 20:43 for the Vaqueros.

Zakaria Aatto finished sixth in 20:31 to help Valley to an eighth-place total of 206 points.

Jody Hay and Jeanene Gerry of Moorpark finished first and second in the women’s race, but the Raiders placed fifth in the team standings.

Mt. SAC, paced by third-place Jennifer Bell, placed first in the 14-team race with 40 points, followed by Glendale with 88, Pasadena with 94, El Camino with 95 and Moorpark with 120.

Hay and Gerry clocked 18:40 and 18:41, respectively, over the 5,000-meter course to move to third and fourth on the all-time meet list.

Only Charlotte Mayock of Riverside, who ran 18:31 in 1995, and Sawako Nakaamura of El Camino, who clocked 18:39 in 1994, have run faster.

Kim Lorimer of Glendale, defending WSC champion, placed fourth in 19:13 with teammate Nancy Lopez sixth in 19:25.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Hawaii def. Pepperdine, 12-15, 15-5, 15-2, 4-15, 15-7--Melissa Snow had 17 kills, 13 digs and four blocks, but Pepperdine suffered its first loss of the season in a nonconference match at Hawaii.

Jennifer Fopma had eight kills, eight digs and 11 blocks for Pepperdine (9-1), ranked No. 8 in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Eastern Washington def. CS Northridge, 15-13, 15-9, 17-15--Alexis Cormier had 17 kills and Laura Szymanski had 16, but the Matadors lost a Big Sky Conference match in Cheney, Wash.

Angie Hall, Jennifer Gabel and Robyn Sonju-Felder combined for 43 kills to lead the Eagles.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 1, Biola 0--Anthon Brueggeman scored on an assist from Chad Hartman with 13 minutes left in regulation in the nonconference game at Master’s.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for goalie Eric Pattison, who had six saves.

Master’s (8-3) outshot Biola (4-2), 17-12.

Cal Lutheran 6, Occidental 0--Oskar Kantaft and Havard Aschim each scored twice to lead the Kingsmen to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

John Teeter also scored and had an assist for Cal Lutheran (6-2, 3-0).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 8, Occidental 0--Betsy Fisch scored twice and had an assist for the Regals (8-2, 3-0) in a SCIAC victory.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 11, Long Beach 9--The Monarchs rallied from a 9-7 deficit in the fourth quarter when Byanka Delgidillo scored all three of her goals and Julie Olson added one of her team-leading four in the fifth-place game of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Valley (6-3) led, 7-3, at halftime, but Long Beach outscored the Monarchs, 6-0, through the third period and early in the fourth.

Olson scored seven goals to lead Valley to an 18-4 victory in a pool-play game.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 15, Rowland 8--Tournament most valuable player Ramiro Saldain had seven goals for Royal in the championship game of the Rowland tournament.

Tyler Templeton had four goals and Tom Onyshko had 15 saves for the Highlanders (9-2), who finished fifth last year.

Crescenta Valley 5, Crespi 4--Jeff Little and David Mulcahey each scored two goals for Crescenta Valley (9-2) in the championship game of the Zack Hahn tournament at Calabasas High.

Little had seven goals in Crescenta Valley’s 12-5 semifinal victory against Thousand Oaks.

Goalie Mike Hoy of Crescenta Valley had seven saves in the title game and nine in the semifinal.

Nordhoff 16, Rio Mesa 5--Spencer Ford scored seven goals, including five in the third quarter, to lift the Rangers to their second consecutive victory in consolation play of the Zack Hahn tournament at Calabasas High.

Shaun Jappe added four goals and Peter Hickok had 12 saves for Nordhoff (4-6), which also defeated Burbank, 9-2. Ford had four goals and Jappe had three against Burbank.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Lagoon Invitational--Freshman Lindsay Owen of Nordhoff posted her second victory in eight days in the nonscoring meet at UC Santa Barbara.

Owen clocked 19:02 over the three-mile course to defeat second-place Orianna Campbell of Ventura by 47 seconds.

Owen ran 19:09 to win the small schools race of the Ojai Invitational at Lake Casitas on Sept. 16.
