Sacramento’s Chances Slip Away

Idaho State recovered a fumble by Charles Roberts in the end zone in the final minutes to preserve a 41-39 victory over Cal State Sacramento in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday night at Pocatello, Idaho.

The Hornets had the ball on the Idaho State one-yard line when Roberts, the leading rusher in NCAA Division I-AA, seemed headed a touchdown. But Mike Clancey jarred the ball loose and the Bengals recovered.

Roberts finished with 153 yards and a touchdown.

Idaho State (2-1, 1-1 in the Big Sky) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and had a 28-14 halftime lead.

Sacramento (2-2, 0-2) rallied with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

DeRonn Finley scored on a 44-yard pass play in the first quarter and his school-record 89-yard punt return built Idaho State’s lead to 35-14.

New Mexico 35, N. Arizona 28--Rudy Caamano passed for two touchdowns and the Lobos’ defense set up two other scores in a nonconference victory at Albuquerque, N.M.

Northern Arizona (2-1) fell behind, 21-0, before starting its comeback on a 43-yard Hail Mary pass from Preston Parsons to 6-foot-5 freshman Clarence Moore as time ran out in the first half.

The Lumberjacks scored touchdowns in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Marcus King and a 20-yard pass from Parsons to Moore, but a missed extra point by Ty Dondelinger left the Lobos (2-3) in front, 21-20.

Parsons had two passes intercepted that led to touchdowns, increasing the lead to 35-20.

Northern Arizona scored with 31 seconds left on an 18-yard pass from Parsons to Trent Lundin.

Caamano completed all seven passes he throw in the first half, helping New Mexico to its early lead.

Cal Poly (SLO) 35, Montana State 14--Seth Burford passed for 182 yards and five touchdowns to help the Mustangs hand the Bobcats their third defeat without a victory at Bozeman, Mont.

Freshman Kevin Flatow of Montana State, starting in place of injured Farhaad Azimi, completed only seven of 22 passes for 93 yards and had four passes intercepted.

Burford had touchdown passes of 32, three, 11, 18 and nine yards as the Mustangs (1-2) overcame a 7-0 deficit by scoring five consecutive touchdowns.

Ryan Johnson of Montana State rushed for 137 yards in 23 carries and a three-yard touchdown, and set up Cameron King’s one-yard touchdown with a 60-yard run.

Eastern Washington 27, Weber State 24--Troy Griggs kicked a 23-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift the Eagles at Cheney, Wash.

Weber State had a chance to win after the field goal but Ole Olesen intercepted Cole Cooper’s pass on the nine-yard line.

Chris Samms threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Lance Ballew with 16 seconds left in regulation to pull Eastern Washington (3-1, 2-0) even, 17-17.

Samms threw a touchdown pass to Shaylon Reed in the first overtime and Johnnie Gray of Weber State tied the score, 24-24, on a two-yard run.
