HIGH SCHOOL

* CRESCENTA VALLEY (3-0) vs. LA CANADA (3-0)

At La Canada High, 7:30 p.m.

La Canada has outscored itsopponents, 110-22, but lopsided victories over Burbank, Glendale and Burroughs are nothing to boast about. Crescenta Valley should be thumping its chest after impressive victories over Thousand Oaks and St. Francis before thrashing outmanned Simi Valley, 55-22, last week. The Falcons’ run-and-shoot offense averages 325 yards a game. QB Hudson Gossard has completed 60% of his passes for 727 yards and seven touchdowns. His favorite targets are Jason Hogan and Jason Burkhart, who rank second and third among area Southern Section receivers. La Canada prefers to grind it out, averaging 300 yards rushing a game. Three Spartans have rushed for 130 yards or more. Chase McKibben is the leader with 358 yards and five touchdowns in 41 carries.

* BUENA (2-1) vs. CAMARILLO (2-1)

At Camarillo High, 7 p.m.

The offensive backfields will be front and center in this nonleague matchup. Buena, ranked No. 5 in Southern Section Division IV, features RB Freddy Keiaho, who has 386 yards and six touchdowns in 58 carries. Camarillo, ranked No. 7 in Division IV, relies on RB Loren Cerny, who has 427 yards and six touchdowns in 80 carries. Each team’s quarterback is adept at the play-action pass. Junior Andrew Paulson of Buena took over for Paul Johnsonbaugh last week and completed 12 of 16 passes for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 28-9 victory over Newbury Park. Senior Mike Jasper completed 10 of 13 passes for 129 yards and rushed for 143 yards in Camarillo’s 39-20 victory over Thousand Oaks. Defense could be the difference for Buena, which allows an average of 192.7 yards a game, sixth-best in the region. Camarillo has the seventh-best offense in the region at 420.3 yards a game, but the Scorpions have allowed 357 yards per game. Buena beat Camarillo, 44-21, last year.

* ARROYO GRANDE (2-1) vs. VENTURA (3-0)

At Ventura High, 7:30 p.m.

Tyler Ebell runs into his toughest test yet. Arroyo Grande, known for its unyielding defense, could provide a stiff challenge for Ebell, who has rushed for 1,013 yards and 13 touchdowns in three games and has helped Ventura outscore opponents, 117-12. The Cougars, ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division IV, are allowing only 152.3 yards per game. Arroyo Grande, which runs the confounding “fly” offense, lost to Dorsey last week, 19-13. Fly back Andrew Ghilhia and RB Russell Spafford will get plenty of carries in the misdirection-based scheme. QB Sean Shields is 6 feet 4, 225 pounds and has a strong arm. Arroyo Grande defeated Ventura last year, 21-7, in the Division IV quarterfinals and held Ebell to 73 yards.

* ST. BONAVENTURE (3-0) vs. SANTA MARIA ST. JOSEPH (2-1)

At St. Joseph High, 7:30 p.m.

St. Bonaventure’s 17-game winning streak will be tested by St. Joseph, an unranked Division X team which gave Division III St. Francis a scare last week. St. Joseph led St. Francis, 14-13, late in the first half, but the Golden Knights scored 22 consecutive points for a 35-14 victory. Last season against St. Joseph, RB Lorenzo Booker rushed for a school-record 249 yards in St. Bonaventure’s 35-15 victory. Booker is averaging 12.9 yards per carry and has scored seven touchdowns. QB Jack Swisher has completed 72% of his passes for 609 yards and 11 touchdowns. WR Whitney Lewis, who has 11 catches for 293 yards and five touchdowns, is a game-breaker with exceptional speed. St. Joseph, with convincing victories over Santa Maria and Bishop Diego, is led by QB Dustin Kelly, who has passed for 711 yards and seven touchdowns. WR Ryan Smith is his main target. RB Tim Felix has rushed for nearly 300 yards and six touchdowns and OL Devin Mills (6-5, 330 pounds) is one of the state’s best.

* NOTRE DAME (3-0) vs. ALEMANY (1-2)

At Alemany, 7:30 p.m.

Last year, these teams played one of the most anticipated games of the season, with Alemany prevailing, 24-21. This time, Notre Dame is a prohibitive favorite. The Knights, led by LB Tom Curiel and DE Tim Volk, are allowing only 170.3 yards per game. QB Phil Beckmann has emerged as a passing and running threat. WR Michael Luderer is on his way to becoming one of the region’s best. But don’t think Notre Dame isn’t feeling a little uneasy, considering Alemany still has RB De’Andre Scott and FB Albert Griffin, both explosive ballcarriers. The Indians committed nine turnovers last week against Chaminade. Their erratic passing game must improve for them to have a chance against Notre Dame.
