Block Party to Encourage Community Peace, Unity

Share

A free block party meant to encourage diversity and discourage violent crime will be held in South-Central Los Angeles this afternoon.

“Unity in the Community Extravaganza 2000,” will feature multicultural drama and music, including a performance by the USC gospel choir, as well as health screening and outreach to troubled youths.

“We’re hoping to be a part of a turnaround in our area,” said Pastor Roy M. Roberts, of the Highway of Holiness Christian Fellowship Church, which is organizing the festivities.

Roberts said he hopes a recent increase in violent crime in the area can be fought by bringing people together at events like the block party. “We can learn to live together, to understand one another, to worship together,” he said. “That’s what this event is all about.”

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m., on the 4000 block of Dalton Avenue, near Martin Luther King Boulevard.
