A Ventura man was struck and killed by a train near Emma Wood State Beach on Monday morning, but authorities were unclear hours later about the circumstances of his death.

An inspector for Union Pacific Railroad found the body of 22-year-old Gabriel Godin at about 9 a.m. along a stretch of tracks across from the beach. Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Hamilton said the man appeared to have been hit by an eastbound freight train at about 6:30 a.m.

Why he was on the tracks has not been determined.

Mike Feiler, an investigator with the Ventura County medical examiner’s office, said there was nothing to suggest suicide, and toxicology tests had not yet been performed by Monday night.
