Saltarelli’s Offense Is the Key as Marina Defeats Los Alamitos

Heather Saltarelli singled home the tying run in the seventh inning, singled home two more runs in the ninth, then scored on a passed ball as Marina defeated eighth-ranked Los Alamitos, 7-4, Tuesday in a Sunset League softball game at Los Alamitos.

The Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the second, but the Griffins responded with four runs in the fifth with a chance to close out a 4-3 victory in the seventh. However, Carrie Hagen walked, and reached third base on the throw after a sacrifice bunt, bringing up Saltarelli.

Hagen was three for five, scored three runs and stole four bases for Marina (7-5, 1-0), which committed six errors. The Vikings have committed 14 errors in their last three games. Marina reliever Bree Boyer (2-1) came on in the fifth inning to pick up the win.

Merissa Hearn was two for three for Los Alamitos (5-7, 0-1).

In another Sunset League game:

Huntington Beach 5, Edison 3--Ashley Perkins (5-4) got the win and Tiffany Brown, who was four for four, earned her second save for the Oilers (8-7, 1-0). Sandi Summers homered and Kari Stockstill and Heidi Weil had two hits each. Amanda Shelton (5-5) suffered the loss for Edison (7-6, 0-1).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 2, Cypress 1--The Golden Hawks (8-5, 1-0) got both runs on a third-inning error as Kristen Karanzias batted with one on and hit a line-drive single that got past the right fielder, scoring herself and Briana Vidovich.

Katella 2, Century 1--First baseman Ashley Ratliff was two for four with both RBIs for Katella (4-9, 1-0), and third baseman Jill Zimmerman was two for three and scored both runs.

No. 7 Loara 2, No. 2 Kennedy 1--Alicia Owen’s two-run triple in the third inning erased a 1-0 deficit for Loara (13-3, 1-0). Katie Joosten pitched a four-hitter, allowing an unearned run, in the victory.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 3, Troy 2--Ashley Chadwick hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh inning and Jennifer McEnterfer singled her home to win for host Fullerton (9-5, 1-0).

La Habra 11, Buena Park 0--Senior Amber Turner pitched a perfect game for La Habra (3-6, 1-0), striking out 10.

Sonora 5, Sunny Hills 0--Carrie Wisen pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight and Jeanine Baca was three for three with three RBIs for the host Raiders (9-6, 1-0). Sunny Hills is 5-6, 0-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 10, Bolsa Grande 9--All 10 runs for visiting Los Amigos (5-8, 1-3) were unearned, including four in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and trailing, 9-6.

No. 5 Pacifica 6, La Quinta 1--Jodie Legaspi went three for four with a two-run double for Pacifica (6-2, 4-0). Jessica Marical struck out nine in tossing a one-hitter.

Santiago 5, Rancho Alamitos 1--Jodi Robertson struck out nine and allowed three hits and Santiago (9-9, 4-1) moved past Rancho Alamitos (7-7, 3-1) into second place.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 9, Whittier Christian 1--Laura Miklos pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Alicia Pharris had a double and two RBI for visiting Orange Lutheran (10-6, 2-1).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 3, Western 0--Narjelana Santos was three for four and A.J. Hull two for four for visiting Brea Olinda (7-5, 1-0). Katy Perkins allowed only two hits to Western (7-3, 0-1) while striking out six.

Savanna 2, Magnolia 1--Lauren Condon had a double, single and scored the winning run on an error for host Savanna (11-5, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Corona del Mar 4, Laguna Beach 1--Lauren Loe was three for four as Alissa Zoelle (4-1) earned the victory for the Sea Kings (6-4, 1-0). Toni Spangler and Autumn Pearce had two hits apiece for Laguna Beach (7-6, 0-1).

Northwood 2, University 0--Sophomore Allison Lewis pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts for host Northwood (5-8, 1-0). Lewis had a perfect game until she hit a batter in the sixth inning.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 5, No. 6 Laguna Hills 1--Sophomore Brittany Crouch pitched a three-hitter and had a triple and scored three runs for Woodbridge (6-8, 1-0). Melissa Haffner had three hits and two RBIs, and Kayla Creamer two hits and three RBIs. Laguna Hills is 16-4, 0-1.
