Student Talent

Moorpark High School’s spring jazz concert tonight will showcase the talents of the school’s three jazz bands, each one a large ensemble consisting of students of varied experience and skill. Swing music--including works by Count Basie and Bill Holeman--will dominate the program, which will include ballads and Latin rhythms. Lane 29--a 20-piece band made up of high school, college and professional musicians--will also perform.

Mexican American Singer

Singer Perla Batalla will perform Saturday as part of Happy Valley School’s concert series at Zalk Theater on campus. The Ojai-based vocalist, who performs in Spanish and English, has earned kudos for her varied repertoire, which cuts across blues, Latin rhythms, jazz and contemporary rock genres. Proceeds will benefit the school’s fine arts program.

Folk Series

Tom and Becky Lowe’s “Folk Music in Ojai” series continues Tuesday with the interpretive stylings of Priscilla Herdman. Billing herself as “songfinder,” Herdman plies the folk circuit with her guitar and a number of traditional and contemporary songs from the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland and Australia.

Musical High Tea

The New West Symphony will hold its Discovery Artists Tea & Recital on Wednesday in Ventura. The affair, a fund-raiser for the Discovery Artists program, will offer high tea with all the Victorian trimmings, plus a performance by the young musicians who make up the ensemble.
