When one thinks of Bill Buckner, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t his 22-year major league career, his time spent with the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs or Boston Red Sox, or his .289 career batting average. The first thing that comes to mind is one lousy little error.

Buckner will forever be remembered for letting a weak ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson slip through his legs, an error that allowed the New York Mets to beat the Red Sox in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets closed out the Series in Game 7.

Buckner’s story, and the effect that error has had on his life, is told in the latest edition of “Beyond the Glory.” Film director Ron Shelton, a consultant for the documentary series, produced this outstanding segment. It deals with Buckner’s whole life but a good deal of time is devoted to the error.

Jody Buckner, Bill’s wife, is among those besides her husband who are interviewed at length. “I do blame the media for what they did to Bill,” she says. “It was grossly unjust. . . . Bill did not lose the World Series.”

Boston sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy says, “The media definitely plays a big hand in what’s happened to Bill and his reputation. This is the most replayed error that I’ve ever seen in sports.”
