Dull Expects Braswell Back

It is becoming apparent that Bobby Braswell, for weeks rumored as a candidate for other coaching jobs, will return for a sixth season as men’s basketball coach at Cal State Northridge.

Braswell, 38, who led Northridge (22-10) to its first NCAA tournament appearance last season, last week withdrew his candidacy for the vacant position at Pepperdine, which eventually hired former NBA coach Paul Westphal.

Braswell has been busy recruiting since the Matadors lost to Kansas, 99-75, in the first round of the Midwest Regional. Braswell said he is close to announcing the names of at least two players expected to sign with Northridge.

“My sense is he will be back with us next season,” said Dick Dull, Northridge athletic director. “I’m excited about him staying here.”

Dull last month recommended to university President Jolene Koester that Braswell receive a bonus of approximately one month’s salary.

Meanwhile, Dull said, he has begun to discuss contract renegotiations with Braswell, who signed an extension last summer.

“As a normal process, we always sit down with coaches and look at contractual matters,” Dull said. “It’s not just about money.

“I think he is committed to staying here. He has great trust in the president and administration.”

Northridge is 85-63 under Braswell.

The Matadors, who won their first Big Sky Conference title last season, will move to the Big West next season.
