Troy Cline of Santa Clarita posted the best Winston West qualifying speed of any driver from the region, averaging 173.628 mph around the D-shaped two-mile oval. He will start 15th in the 30-car field, on the inside of the eighth row next to Mike Duncan of Bakersfield.

Bill Sedgwick of Acton and Woodside will comprise the 11th row. Sedgwick will start 21st after clocking 171.017 in a Monte Carlo.

Rookie Mark Reed of Bakersfield captured his third pole position in five races with a race-record 181.593 clocking in a Pontiac Grand Prix.

Sedgwick’s car is sporting a new paint scheme because of a new sponsorship deal that ties in to the car’s No. 24.

Gone is the fire-engine red color with primary sponsorship from DuPont Stainmaster Carpets.

The Chevy Monte Carlo owned by Tim Buckley is now blue, with sponsorship from 24-Hour Fitness centers, and carries small DuPont logos.

Kenny Sargent of Van Nuys will have NASCAR Winston Cup rookie Jason Leffler of Long Beach among his guests Sunday on SpeedFreaks, airing at 7 p.m. on KLSX-FM (97.1). . . . Bryan Herta of Valencia promised to shave his head if he did not finish in the top 10 in points in the CART Fed/Ex Championship Series on the show April 22. The comment was made while Herta was verbally sparring with Statt Mann Caruthers (actually Bill Wood). Herta said if he does finish in the top 10, he expects Wood--who has a shaved head--to grow his hair.
