Anchondo Is Bloodied but Unbeaten at Irvine
La Puente’s Mike Anchondo kept his perfect record intact, winning a unanimous decision over Juan Aranday of Mexico. But Aranday made his young opponent earn the victory Thursday night at the Irvine Marriott.
Aranday (9-20), a replacement for injured La Habra fighter Cornelio Lopez, made Anchondo’s nose bleed early in the fifth round with a series of jabs, then stunned him with a huge left hook to end the round. Anchondo (11-0) took another hard left hook to his chest late in Round 6 but ended the seventh in control of the bout.
In another bout on the six-fight card, heavyweight Javier Mora of Westminster (6-0-1) made quick work of Paul Ashley (2-3) of Yorba Linda. The bout was scheduled for six rounds, but Mora won with a knockout 2 minutes 55 seconds into the first round. Mora knocked Ashley down twice--the second time with a powerful left-right combination that sent Ashley crashing into the corner.
Mexico’s Enrique Ornelas, who now fights out of La Habra, raised his record to 9-0 with a tougher-than-expected knockout of Kenny McCollough (5-5) of Las Vegas in the sixth and final round of their middleweight bout.
