Sposa had a 10-under 134 total on the Forest Oaks course. Simpson, the first-round leader, shot a 69.

Sposa’s 66 matched his best round of the season and gave him his first lead on tour after two rounds.

“I’m just trying to stay real calm and not get ahead of myself,” the 31-year-old player said. “I’ve been out here for three years now, so I know this thing is so far from over that for me to start talking about victory speeches would be ridiculous.”

Rosie Jones, trying to became the first U.S. winner in 11 LPGA Tour events this year, shot a three-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead in the Kathy Ireland Championship at Austin, Texas.

Jones could have extended her lead even further but closed with a three-putt bogey from 15 feet for a seven-under 133 total.

Canada’s Lorie Kane was second after a 68. Cindy Figg-Currier was three strokes back after a 67, and Dottie Pepper, the last U.S. winner, shot a 66 to top a seven-player group at 137.

Hale Irwin made a 45-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a share of the first-round lead with Spain’s Jose Maria Canizares in the Bruno’s Memorial Classic at Hoover, Ala.
