Agassi Falls in First Round
MONTREAL — Andre Agassi was upset by Croatian qualifier Ivan Ljubicic, 6-2, 6-4, Tuesday in the first round of the Tennis Masters Series-Canada.
“I felt like all [Ljubicic] had to do was keep the ball in the court,” said Agassi, who lost in the first round for the fourth time this year. “It wasn’t pretty. I would have struggled against a lot of players today.”
Agassi, seeded third, lost to a player ranked 58th in the ATP Champions Race. He double-faulted three times in his first service game and squandered a 4-2, 40-0 lead in the second set.
Spain’s Alberto Martin defeated Michael Chang, 6-2, 6-3. Chang’s 2001 match record fell to 8-15.
