“Color, Myth and Music: Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Synchromism,” opening Sunday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, looks at the life and works of the provocative and pioneering Modernist who became a leading advocate of Modernism here. The 60-year survey focuses on Synchromist paintings--conceived as equivalents to musical compositions--but also includes the artist’s lesser-known portraits, landscapes, still lifes and WPA murals.

Saturday’s free Getty Family Festival honors current exhibitions devoted to Walker Evans at the J. Paul Getty Museum with an all-day celebration of American music, dance, storytelling, art-making and gallery activities. Highlights include performances by bluesman Floyd Dixon, the Wartime Radio Revue, the Alley Cats, Going South Band and Michelle Berne’s 12-foot Ensor Puppets as well as Native American storytelling with Geri Keams.

7 pm: Music

The seven members of Los Folkloristas are more than a performing group. They’re a moving, musical museum. Between them, they’ve mastered more than 100 folk instruments and documented songs from across South America, from pre-Columbian times to the present. This year marks the Mexico City-based ensemble’s 35th anniversary.

7:30 pm: Music

Alice Ripley, Douglas Sills, Gregg Baker and Susan Egan are among the principals in a staged version of the landmark Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II musical “Show Boat” at the Hollywood Bowl. Conducted by John Mauceri and staged by John Bowab, this marks the first time the 1927 work will be done complete at the Bowl. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Mitch Hanlon singers also participate.
