Mark McGwire hit his 573rd home run to tie Harmon Killebrew for fifth place on the career list and the St. Louis Cardinals ended Greg Maddux’s 10-game winning streak, beating the Atlanta Braves, 4-0, Wednesday at St. Louis.

Darryl Kile (11-7) allowed eight hits over eight innings, striking out eight.

Maddux (14-6) extended his streak without a walk to 64 1/3 innings, and left the game after the sixth.

The National League record is 68 innings, shared by Christy Mathewson and Randy Jones. Bill Fischer of the Kansas City Athletics holds the major league record with 84 innings.

McGwire, whose last nine hits have been home runs, hit his 19th homer in the sixth inning. The two-run shot off Maddux, which put the Cardinals ahead 3-0, went over the center-field wall and was measured at 421 feet.

Next up for McGwire is Frank Robinson, who is in fourth place on the career list with 586.

The Cardinals scored their first run in the sixth. Fernando Vina singled and scored from first as left fielder B.J. Surhoff bobbled a hit by Placido Polanco for his first error of the season.

Maddux, who had not lost since May 30, and Kile dueled until the sixth.

The Braves loaded the bases with two out in the sixth, but rookie left fielder Albert Pujols made a running catch of Paul Bako’s liner to end the inning.
