Olympians Lead Qualifying for Nationals

Several swimmers from the region qualified for the Phillips 66 U.S. Summer National Championships with strong efforts in the Southwest Conference Championship last week at the Janet Evans Swim Complex in Fullerton.

Chad Carvin of the Mission Viejo Nadadores and Gabrielle Rose of Irvine Novaquatics, both 2000 U.S. Olympians, won the 200-meter freestyle and 100 butterfly events, respectively, in national-qualifying times of 1 minute 53.31 seconds and 1:02.01.

The nationals qualifying time for the 200 free is 1:53.69. For the butterfly, it is 1:03.39.

Hayley Peirsol of Irvine Novaquatics won the girls’ 1,500-meter free on Sunday in 16:40.86, and Masami Tanaka of the Irvine Aquazots won the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.32.

Tanaka also tied with Kara Denby of Conejo Simi Aquatics for second place in the 50-meter free (27.32) won by Sarah Jones of South Coast Swim Club in 27.06 on Saturday.

The Phillips 66 Summer National Championships are Aug. 14-18 in Fresno.
