Two Seeded Players Left in Pursuit of Title

Justin Montgomery of Oxnard, Jack Li of Irvine and Jamil Al-Agba of Camarillo, the only seeded players remaining in the winners’ bracket, each posted third-round victories Monday in the boys’ 16 division at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Super National Hard-Court Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The seventh-seeded Montgomery defeated Aaron Phillips of Effingham, Ill., 6-3, 6-4. Li, seeded 12th, defeated Alex Stone of Irvington, N.Y., 6-4, 6-2, and No. 13 Al-Agba defeated Craig Smith of Pickerington, Ohio, 6-2, 6-1.

Second-seeded Lindsey Nelson of Orange and fourth-seeded Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar won second-round matches in the girls’ 16s at the USTA Super National Hard-Court Championships at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Nelson defeated Ristine Olson of Missoula, Mont., 6-1, 6-2, and Yelsey defeated Blakely Ann Offutt of Charlotte, N.C., 6-0, 6-0.

Also advancing were unseeded 14-year-old twins Ivana and Vania King of Long Beach, the younger sisters of two-time boys’ 18 national champion Phillip King.

Ivana defeated Michelle Pautler of Kamuela, Hawaii, 7-5, 6-2, and Vania defeated Kimberly Lyles of Shreveport, La., 6-2, 6-2.
