A young child and a man in his 30s were shot to death and at least one other man was wounded when gunfire erupted on the streets of Willowbrook Wednesday night, sheriff’s deputies said.

The fatalities were part of a running gun battle between groups in two cars as they drove on the 13100 block of Willowbrook Avenue near Wilmington Avenue about 9:10 p.m., said department spokeswoman Deputy Roberta Granek.

The child, who was between 1 and 3, was shot in the head, officials said. The names of the child and the other victim were not released pending notification of next of kin.

A deputy responding to the call was shot at a few blocks from the scene, at Anzac Avenue and Nord Street, authorities said. The deputy was not injured.

Wanda Johnson, 38, a neighbor, said the dead man was not a gang member.

“That’s what’s so sad about it,” she said.

Moments before or after those shootings, a man was gunned down about a block away at Largo Avenue and Stockwell Street, according to Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Jauch. The man was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Dozens of officers converged on the scene on the outskirts of Compton and several streets were cordoned off. There were no arrests.
