Police Officer Dodges Driver
A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested Thursday after he led authorities on a chase through La Palma and tried to run over a police officer, authorities said.
Phuong Vinh Dinh, 36, of Garden Grove was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, evading police and driving under the influence of drugs, Sgt. Eric Nunez said.
Dinh was seen driving suspiciously about 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Miller Elementary School in the 7700 block of Furman Road, Nunez said.
When police arrived, Dinh drove to a nearby residential tract, authorities said, then sped away erratically through red lights and across sidewalks and grass areas.
At one point, Dinh tried to run over a motorcycle officer in the parking lot of La Palma Intercommunity Hospital, Nunez said. The officer was not injured.
Dinh was arrested after he crashed his car into a tree and a brick wall.
