Stringer Died of Multiple Organ Failure

An autopsy of Korey Stringer shows the Minnesota Viking tackle died of multiple organ failure as a result of heatstroke and had normal toxicological readings, his agent said.

“This confirms what the Stringer family and I expected to hear,” said agent James Gould, who received the six-page report late Thursday. “All the circumstances surrounding his death from the moment he took the field until the moment he died, we’re still looking into.”

Stringer died Aug. 1, hours after collapsing in an air-conditioned trailer after finishing the morning practice on the second day of training camp. He became the NFL’s first player to die of heatstroke.

Gould consulted with Stringer’s wife, Kelci, before releasing results of the autopsy. It was conducted by Dr. Dennis Gremel, chief pathologist at Immanuel St. Joseph’s, the Mankato, Minn., hospital where Stringer died.

“Getting a report like this does not in any way diminish or relinquish the pain the family is suffering through,” Gould said.

Gould said he and the Stringer family are waiting for the findings of an investigation by the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which could take more than a week to complete.
