When Honesty IsFront-Page News

Share

“Man Has Honest Answer to a $203,000 Question,” (Aug. 29) is the most disturbing article I have read in a long time. The reason is found in a quote from police Sgt. Rick Sanchez, who said, “I find it really hard to believe in this day and age that we have someone honest enough to turn in $203,000.”

I teach courses in leadership to school administrators who aspire to be principals and superintendents. We have added a significant section on ethics on the theory that leadership skills are worthless without a moral compass. I am not yet ready to believe that all or even most people choose to do the wrong thing. We are fortunate that our schools are staffed with teachers and administrators who, for the greatest part, believe in the best of kids and lead by example. We should all worry if this is ever not the case.

I commend Ascension Franco Gonzales for showing us what a real man is and thank The Times for printing the article. How unfortunate that my generation has made honesty front-page news.
