Northern Iowa beat No. 12 Iowa by outhustling the Hawkeyes, and the Panthers have floor burns to prove it.

Robbie Sieverding scored 30 points and Octav Morariu got a key offensive rebound and basket late as Northern Iowa stunned the Hawkeyes, 78-76, Tuesday night at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

David Gruber added 22 points and 12 rebounds for Northern Iowa (5-2), which constantly dived for loose balls and outscrapped the taller Hawkeyes (6-3) for offensive rebounds. Gruber had 10 offensive rebounds.

“I think all our guys have one or two rug burns from all the diving on the floor,” Sieverding said. “We had to do that. They have more athletes. Players just want to go to Iowa.”

The schools are about 90 miles apart.

The Panthers had all they needed in this one and beat Iowa for the fourth time in 32 games. The final buzzer sent dozens of Northern Iowa fans swarming onto the court to join the celebrating players.

No. 4 Kansas 83, No. 23 Wake Forest 76--Nick Collison had 16 points at Lawrence, Kan., as the Jayhawks avenged last year’s 31-point loss at Wake Forest.

Broderick Hicks had 12 points to lead five players in double figures for Wake Forest (5-2), which had never played at Kansas (5-1).

No. 9 Syracuse 91, Hofstra 65--DeShaun Williams had 23 points and seven assists at Syracuse, N.Y., and the Orangemen (9-0) played without Coach Jim Boeheim on the bench for the first time in 26 years and defeated Hofstra (4-2).

Boeheim, who had coached 816 consecutive games since taking over the program in 1976, was recovering from prostate surgery performed Monday in St. Louis and is expected to miss at least two games.
