The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honored Walt Disney, founder of the Disney empire, on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Hollywood paid tribute to the pioneering animator in a two-hour event that included rare movie clips, home movies and discussions with family members and associates about his life.

Disney, who was born in Chicago and raised in Missouri, turned a fledgling animation film studio and its Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck creations into a global entertainment powerhouse.

He died in 1966 at age 65.

Walt Disney World in Orlando marked the occasion with a parade, fireworks show, an appearance by Julie Andrews and a 25-foot portrait of the man made out of cakes.
