Top-ranked Long Beach State took another step toward a perfect season by defeating Northern Iowa, 30-19, 30-21, 30-14, before 3,663 in an NCAA regional semifinal Thursday night at the Pyramid in Long Beach.

Cheryl Weaver had 12 kills and Elisha Thomas had nine kills and eight blocks for Long Beach (31-0), which needs three more victories to become the third NCAA team to finish a season unbeaten. Nebraska did it last year and the 49ers did it in 1998.

Long Beach plays UCLA tonight at 7:30 for a spot in the Final Four.

Long Beach needed only 80 minutes to dispatch Northern Iowa (31-2) and has lost only six games this season.
