No Bull, Chicago Surprises Celtics

Ron Mercer hit a late go-ahead jumper and the Chicago Bulls rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat the Boston Celtics, 87-84, Saturday night at Chicago.

The loss ended Boston’s six-game winning streak.

Brad Miller led Chicago with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Antoine Walker made seven of 10 three-point baskets and led Boston with 27 points. Paul Pierce had only 12 points.

New York 101, Indiana 99--The Knicks began a new era without former coach Jeff Van Gundy, who resigned earlier in the day, by beating the Pacers at New York.

Latrell Sprewell had 25 points for the Knicks, Marcus Camby had 18 points and 22 rebounds, and Allan Houston scored 18 points.

Jermaine O’Neal led Indiana with 22 points.

Washington 102, Dallas 95--Michael Jordan scored 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Wizards at Dallas.

Jordan’s only baskets through three quarters came on two dunks and a vintage layup. He missed his first 12 jumpers.

The Wizards did fine without him the first 21/2 quarters, leading by 21 points.

Michael Finley scored 32 points for Dallas.

Rookie Brendan Haywood scored a season-high 19 points for the Wizards.

Memphis 92, Philadelphia 83--Rookie Pau Gasol scored 24 points and Jason Williams added 23 at Memphis as the Grizzlies beat the injury-riddled 76ers for the second time in six days.

Vonteego Cummings scored a career-high 28 points for the 76ers.

Portland 113, Seattle 92--Rasheed Wallace scored 28 points and Bonzi Wells had 27 at Portland, Ore., as the Trail Blazers shot 56% and handed the SuperSonics their fourth consecutive loss.

Damon Stoudamire had 13 assists and Scottie Pippen had 11 in a successful job of sharing the point-guard duties for the Blazers.

Gary Payton scored 21 points and Vin Baker had 20 for the Sonics.

Atlanta 107, Orlando 104--Jason Terry, who finished with 28 points, made two free throws with 17.7 seconds left at Atlanta and the Hawks ended a three-game skid.

Orlando’s Tracy McGrady finished with 40 points.

Cleveland 109, Denver 99--Lamond Murray scored a season-high 33 points and Wes Person added 24 for the Cavaliers at Cleveland.

Andre Miller, the league’s assist leader, had 13 as the Cavaliers set a season high for points.

Minnesota 107, Houston 97--Kevin Garnett scored 21 points at Minneapolis as the Timberwolves extended the Rockets’ losing streak to nine.

Walt Williams scored 23 points and Cuttino Mobley had 21 for Houston.

Milwaukee 95, New Jersey 79--Sam Cassell scored a season-high 28 points and Ray Allen had 21 for the Bucks at Milwaukee.

Keith Van Horn had 15 points and Jason Kidd added 14 for the Nets.

Utah 111, Golden State 101--Karl Malone had a season-high 39 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, for the Jazz at Salt Lake City.

Utah’s John Stockton scored 15 points and Donyell Marshall scored 21 points against his former team.

Larry Hughes scored 26 for the Warriors, who have lost six of their last seven games.
