Eviction of Horses From Will Rogers Park Delayed

From Times Staff Reports

The planned eviction of 45 horses boarded at Will Rogers State Park was delayed Thursday by a Santa Monica Superior Court judge. The removal of the horses by Jan. 10 had been ordered by state officials, who contend that the privately owned animals cause environmental damage to the park.

Horse owners say the ouster would violate equestrian-oriented provisions of the 1944 donation of Rogers’ estate as parkland by his widow. State officials counter that horses are not being banned from the park, just prohibited from boarding there full time.

Judge Jerry K. Fields set a Feb. 13 hearing into a request by horse owners to permanently block the evictions.
