Stanford Rallies in Second Half to Beat Arizona State

Nicole Powell had 25 points and nine rebounds, and Lindsey Yamasaki scored 22 as No. 6 Stanford rallied in the second half to beat Arizona State, 75-66, Friday night at Tempe, Ariz.

The Cardinal (10-1, 2-0 in the Pacific 10) trailed, 37-33, after Arizona State’s Melody Johnson made two free throws two seconds into the second half. But Stanford surged ahead with an 11-1 run to take a 44-38 lead on Yamasaki’s two free throws 3:32 later.

Powell and Yamasaki each scored 13 points after halftime, and Kelley Suminski finished with 11 for the Cardinal.

Amanda Levens scored 28 points for the Sun Devils (9-3, 0-1) and Betsy Boardman had 11.

After Stanford’s run, the Sun Devils drew within five, cutting their deficit to 52-47 on a jumper by Carrie Buckner with 11:17 remaining. But Yamasaki had six points and Suminski four during a 10-2 surge that opened a 62-49 lead with 7:58 to go.

The Sun Devils, hampered by fouls down the stretch, never got closer than seven points. They also didn’t shoot well--Johnson missed four consecutive free throws in the last three minutes.

Arizona State had a 34-21 lead, its biggest of the game, with 5:02 left in the first half, but the Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils, 12-1, until the break.

No. 11 Louisiana Tech 78, Western Kentucky 47--Ayana Walker had 16 points, six during a key two-minute span of the first half, and 10 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La.

The Lady Techsters (4-3) won their third consecutive game after three losses in a row. Natalie Powers scored 22 points for Western Kentucky (6-5).

No. 12 Texas Tech 62, Rutgers 49--Jia Perkins scored 19 points and Amber Tarr added 11 as Texas Tech extended its winning streak to five games at Piscataway, N.J.

The Lady Raiders (7-2) pulled away with a 13-0 run early in the second half, with Natalie Ritchie hitting a three-point basket to give Texas Tech the lead with 15:30 to play.

Davalyn Cunningham led Rutgers (4-6) with 20 points.

No. 13 Michigan 71, Oakland, Mich. 42--Jennifer Smith scored 22 points and Stephanie Gandy added 15 for Michigan at Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines (10-1) have won 10 consecutive games after opening with a loss to No. 11 Louisiana Tech. Sarah Judd led Oakland (3-7) with 17 points.

No. 20 Florida 61, No. 14 Colorado 50--Vanessa Hayden had 24 points and 17 rebounds to lead Florida at Gainesville, Fla..

Brandi McCain added 14 points and five assists for the Gators (8-3), and Courtney Cooper had 10 points. Britt Hartshorn led Colorado (9-3) with 13 points.

Mississippi State 71, No. 18 North Carolina State 58--LaToya Thomas had 26 points and eight rebounds in Mississippi State’s upset victory in the Sports Tour International tournament at Cancun, Mexico.

Tan White added 22 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Lady Bulldogs (8-2). Carisse Moody and Kaayla Chones each scored 13 points for the Wolfpack (6-4).

Penn State 67, No. 19 Texas 65--Kelly Mazzante scored 23 points as Penn State held off Texas in Austin to improve to 7-4.

Texas had a chance to win in the final seconds, but guard Kenya Larkin lost control of the ball and had to foul Mazzante, who made one of two free throws. Tracy Cook led Texas (7-2) with 16 points.

Drake 67, No. 21 Tulane 58--Ja’Nae Mosley scored eight of her 14 points in the last 6:09 and Stephanie Schmitz also had 14 points, leading Drake (6-3) past Tulane at Des Moines, Iowa.
