Decrepit Schools Need Help From Parents

Share

Re “New Team, New Hope for School,” Dec. 18: I hope Sylvia Rousseau [LAUSD local superintendent] will take the time to visit more of the L.A. schools to see that Locke High School is only one of many that have deplorable conditions for students and teachers as well. I have been in several L.A. and Orange County high schools and I was sickened to see the conditions some of the schools were in.

I was recently asked to be a parent volunteer to call other parents on a bond measure to clean up the restrooms and update our aging and decrepit schools. The parents I spoke to told me that some children won’t even use the restrooms and will wait till they get home because the facilities are so awful.

What is wrong with our values? We are so focused on getting a new stadium, airport or development of expensive homes in our neighborhoods to boost our own home values that our children have to put up with conditions that none of us would tolerate for even one day. How can we expect them to learn and become valuable contributing members of our society when we don’t give them the basic necessities?

I challenge all parents to ask your children about their school conditions and then get involved in fixing our schools now!
