Virginia Rallies to Win

Travis Watson scored 18 points and J.C. Mathis had 16 to help No. 5-ranked Virginia rally past Rutgers, 76-68, Sunday at Charlottesville, Va.

Rutgers, which had won eight in a row, used a 12-0 run for a 45-36 lead with 19:04 remaining.

After a timeout, Virginia (8-0) scored seven consecutive points to pull within 45-43. Virginia tied the score, 48-48, on Adam Hall’s jumper with 13:51 left.

Rutgers pulled within 66-65 heading into the final three minutes, before the Cavaliers scored eight points in a row to secure the victory.

Jerome Coleman scored 16 points and Herve Lamizana had 15 for Rutgers (8-3).

OTHER GAMES

Marcus Melvin made a three-point basket at the buzzer and North Carolina State (10-2) defeated Houston, 67-66, at Houston. Melvin had 18 points.... Micah Brand scored 17 points to lead Massachusetts (6-3) in a 78-60 victory over Maine (2-8) at Amherst, Mass.
