SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP
UC Riverside 100, Sacramento State 66--In this season of giving, UC Riverside players were in the spirit of helping each other get open shots and that spelled doom for an outclassed Sacramento State squad at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
Riverside (4-6) won for the fourth time in five games and easily topped prior season bests with its point total and shooting percentage. The Highlanders made 61.9% of their shots and hit 10 of 17 three-point tries.
Among the things that Coach John Masi said pleased him the most were a season-high 28 assists shared among 13 players. Not one player took more than nine shots and the constant generosity led to numerous fast-break baskets against the ragtag Hornets (4-7).
“We made the extra pass tonight,” Masi said. “That’s unselfish team basketball. Any coach is going to appreciate that.”
Forward John Galbreath led five players in double figures with 17 points.
Center Vili Morton had his third consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Morton was a force again defensively with a career-high seven blocks. The sophomore is averaging 3.7 for the season.
