Pacifica Will Forfeit 10 Victories for Use of Ineligible Player

Pacifica will forfeit 10 victories for using an ineligible player, Principal John Johnson said Friday.

The player, a key reserve, transferred from Esperanza to Pacifica in violation of Southern Section rules, Johnson said.

Pacifica, which defeated La Quinta, 66-43, Thursday without the ineligible player, is now 4-20 overall and 1-9 in the Garden Grove League.

Villa Park defensive back Bryan Arguello, a Times’ Orange County first-team selection, has committed to Pennsylvania, Spartan Coach Pat Mahoney said.

Also, Villa Park quarterback John Henry Jackson has committed to Bucknell.

ACADEMICS

Brown volleyball player Jessie Cooper (Tustin High), Columbia volleyball player Katie Beauregard (Mater Dei) and Yale soccer player Megan MacLeod (Trabuco Hills) were among 80 athletes named academic All-Ivy League for the fall.

* Four UC Irvine water polo players were named to the academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team.

Senior Dan Hayes (University High), junior John Dorfi, senior Dan Hipp and senior Mark Merlo qualified for the award by maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average.

TRACK & FIELD

Gil Garcia is taking a one-year leave of absence as coach of the Santa Margarita girls’ team to pursue his master’s degree, he said.

Garcia led the Eagles to Southern Section Division II and Orange County titles in 1999, earning The Times’ Orange County coach of the year award. He also led the Eagles to the Serra League title last season and Sea View League titles in 1998 and ’99.

Garcia, who is taking satellite courses through Azusa Pacific in hopes of completing his degree, plans to return as cross-country coach in the fall.

Hayes Ferry, an assistant track coach at Santa Margarita the last three years, will assume Garcia’s coaching duties.
