Camarillo Gains Revenge With Victory Over Oxnard

A victory on Monday night would have given Oxnard High its third consecutive Pacific View League girls’ basketball title.

Camarillo had other plans, not the least of which was avenging a Jan. 16 double-overtime loss in which the Scorpions squandered a 19-point first-half lead.

The Scorpions did just that with a 52-44 victory at Camarillo (19-5, 6-1 in league play) to pull into a tie with Oxnard (12-11, 6-1) with one game to play.

“We wanted this so bad,” said guard Gillian Lillich, who scored 11 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter. “We were deserving to win both times.”

Camarillo, seeking a share of its second league title in three seasons, lost to the Yellowjackets, 84-79, after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead.

Its quest for retribution was complicated when starting center Rachel Young was sidelined with stomach flu and point guard Lindsey Calderon was scratched from the starting lineup after injuring her left knee in warmups.

Monica Oakley, playing for Calderon, scored seven points and Lauren Stroot added eight points.

Calderon eventually played and scored nine.

It was a forgettable game by Oxnard, which made only 16 of 57 shots and six of 15 free throws.

Sienna Abraham scored 10 points for the Yellowjackets.

Both teams can clinch a share of the title with victories Wednesday.
