Quartz Hill Doesn’t Get Message and Beats Hart

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Erin Misaki, now at the University of Portland, sent midfielder Ali Pavoni an e-mail Thursday reminding her that when Hart High won the Southern Section Division II championship in 1999, it won the first two games without Misaki, who was The Times’ regional player of the year that season.

The Indians played Friday without their best defensive player, Dee Dee Sanguinetti, who was serving a suspension after receiving two yellow cards in their final regular-season game against Burroughs.

Without Sanguinetti in the back, Quartz Hill cruised to a 4-2 victory in a first-round Division II playoff game at Quartz Hill High.

The Indians (12-6-5), who also were without midfielder Sarah Dean, were knocked out of the first round for the second consecutive season. Quartz Hill (19-2-1) plays Mira Costa on Tuesday.

Mira Costa beat Mater Dei, 3-0.

“We can’t really blame [the loss] on not having [them],” Pavoni said. “We just didn’t play well [Friday]. I don’t know what it was. It was just a bad game.”

It got ugly for the Indians, who spotted the Rebels a 4-0 lead by the 57th minute before they began to tighten up on defense.

In the 26th minute, Kellie Cox received a ball 40 yards from the goal, dribbled through the defense and scored.

Shauna Cabriales picked up a mis-kicked ball by Hart defender Julie Hauserman and dribbled untouched to the goal before beating goalkeeper Cassondra Kaeding in the 32nd minute.

Andrea Cabriales converted a penalty kick to take a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute after Hauserman pulled her sister, Shauna Cabriales, down in the penalty area.

Shauna Cabriales scored in the 57th minute after four defenders watched her receive a pass in front of the goal.

“The score was really important to us,” Cox said. “It’s good to score a lot of goals against a tough team.”

Most of Hart’s offense came from Pavoni. She took six of the Indians’ eight shots, assisted on Ebony Lewis’ goal in the 57th minute and Christina Sanchez’s goal in injury time.

“We didn’t have the attitude that because we beat Hart earlier in the season it was going to be easy,” said Quartz Hill Coach Maury Cauchon.

“I thought Hart played with a lot of heart. They were down two players [Friday].”
